Students Visa Immigration
There are a few ways to come to Canada as a student. The appropriate Canadian study permit for a foreign student depends on his abilities, his potentials, and the exact condition. Generally, to study in Canada, the foreign student will need a study permit. However, there are several circumstances where the foreign student will be able to study in Canada without a study permit. The Canadian federal and provincial governments are continuously updating their programs and has set forth rules and requirements to make sure that Canadian study program is beneficial and effective for the newcomers and for Canada.
Get a Study Permit
To be eligible to study in Canada temporarily, generally it is a prerequisite for the foreign national that he gets a study permit. The applicant will require a Letter of Acceptance from a from a Designated Canadian Learning Institution before he is granted with a temporary study permit. The foreign student from visa exempt country should also ensure if he needs to apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to fly or transit to Canada depending on the origin of nationality.
To be eligible to get a study permit in Canada, a foreign national should meet the following requirements:
- The prospective student should have been accepted by a designated Canadian learning institution.
- The person will have to prove that he has an adequate amount of money to pay for his tuition fees, his living expenses and return transportation to his country of origin.
- The person must have a clean record with no criminal background and provide a police certificate, if necessary.
- The person should be in good health and undergo a complete medical examination if requested by IRCC.
- The immigration officer must be satisfied that the person will leave Canada at the end of the stay authorized by the study permit.
In some cases, the foreign national does not need a study permit to go to school in Canada. If the prospective student needs to be in Canada for six months or less for studying, he might not need a study permit. A family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada, a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act or a foreign national who is Registered Indians in Canada might not need a study permit too.
For the extension of the study permit in Canada, the student should apply at least 30 days before his status expires. The student must complete the Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada to extend his study permit. It can be applied online or on paper to get the study permit extension.
If the study permit expires after the student has submitted his application for an extension but before he receives a decision on his application, the student can stay in Canada under what is called implied status. That means the law implies he is a temporary resident. That status lasts until CIC decides on his new permit application. However, the student must follow the following regulations.
- If the person applied for another study permit: He must stay in Canada and meet the conditions of his original study permit.
- If the person applied for a different kind of permit: He/She cannot do any of the activities allowed by the original study permit.
Designated Learning Institutes
A Designated Learning Institution is a school in Canada where a student have to be accepted at before they become eligible for a study permit. To apply for a study permit on or after June 1, 2014, the applicant will need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and will need to provide the Designated Learning Institution number (DLI #) for their school of choice. The DLI number is the number that begins with the letter “O” on the study permit application form. The prospective student needs to consult the designated learning institutions list (DLI) for schools at the postsecondary level.
All primary and secondary schools in Canada are automatically designated and no DLI number is provided. Therefore, applicants for primary and secondary schools do not need a DLI number on their application form.
